Leadership Team


Ian always keeps his eye on the horizon. He wants to know what’s headed his way and figure out his next move so he can take advantage of every opportunity. By staying agile and excited about challenges, he has attracted a dynamic, capable team who are eager to find creative ways to do their best work.

Born and raised in Sussex, New Brunswick, Ian completed the Civil Engineering Technology program at NBCC in Moncton before settling in Calgary in 1997. After 10 years refining his leadership style as a project manager, he moved to Edmonton, where he became general manager of Doublestar. In 2010, he proudly accepted the role of president, and he became chief executive officer in 2013.

Ian is passionate about creating a strong, innovative company that can consistently deliver quality results on jobs of any size. His commitment to continuous improvement and meeting challenges head-on is fuelled by his drive to be an industry leader.

Whenever possible, Ian enjoys getting away to his cabin in New Brunswick to relax into lake living with his family.


Nick’s main focus as director of projects at Doublestar Drilling is to expand the company’s traditional business into newer markets. Having lived and worked across Western Canada, Nick has an extensive background as a project manager in the drilling and foundation sector. This experience has exposed him to the operational and technical elements of challenging shoring, micro-piling, anchoring, and grouting projects.

With the goal of creating growth, Nick ensures Doublestar is always delivering quality, timely work on budget.

Nick calls Calgary home and enjoys getting active outdoors and travelling in his free time.


Chad is the Director of Operations at Doublestar Drilling. While overseeing all branches of field operations, Chad focuses on opportunities for the company to grow and operate effectively. Chad prides himself on building strong relationships and ensuring all crews on the ground have the support they need. With 17 years of practical experience, Chad has the ability to think strategically to handle any issue that may occur in the field.

Even with Chad’s busy schedule, he finds time to be continuously involved in organizations such as Blackfoot Minor Hockey Association, Bow View Ringette Association and Calgary Axemen Lacrosse.

Chad lives in Calgary with his family, and takes any opportunity he can to go boating, skiing or playing hockey with his wife and kids.



Joel is the director of business at Doublestar Drilling. He is responsible for overseeing all business operations and administration to ensure optimal project performance. A University of Lethbridge graduate, Joel thinks strategically to make the most of time and effort and is always working to create an engaging workplace for his fellow employees.

Years of playing basketball competitively instilled in Joel a solid work ethic and determination. His competitive nature comes into play on a daily basis as he works to position Doublestar as the company of choice for piling, shoring, and anchoring across Western Canada.

Today, Joel lives in Airdrie with his wife and two young daughters. As a lifelong sports enthusiast, he enjoys golf, basketball, waterskiing, snowboarding, and any other activity that gets him moving.


Mark is the Director of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) with Doublestar Drilling. Mark is well-versed in legal guidelines and corporate governance best practices and is a professional of high ethical standards. Mark is responsible for the oversight of departmental strategy and vision, aligning systems while preserving the company’s integrity and the objectives of the business.

Mark enjoys his family time fishing, football and basketball.

Shaun is responsible for the overall management of Doublestar Drilling’s Edmonton region. His focus is on finding and creating new growth opportunities, strengthening client relations, and ensuring best in class performance on projects. Shaun’s industry experiences, drive, and leadership qualities ensure that Doublestar Drilling will continue to safely deliver projects on time and on budget for our valued clients.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Shaun started work in the construction industry as a laborer in the early 1990s and worked his way up to a superintendent role. His natural curiosity and desire for more knowledge and responsibility led him to the Civil Engineering Technology program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology where he graduated with honors in 2001. After graduation from NAIT Shaun worked for an engineering consultant in the land development field for three years before moving into the foundation piling industry.

When Shaun is not at work he enjoys spending time with his family, watching movies, listening to music and casual gaming.



As Saskatchewan region manager at Doublestar Drilling, John focuses his energy on business development, working with general contractors and developers in the area. This includes sourcing proposed work, preparing projects, and reviewing bids and contracts. For day-to-day operations, he oversees the scheduling of manpower and equipment for all jobs in Saskatchewan.

John draws from years of experience working with Ground Engineering Group of Companies and as a manager within foundation pile contracting companies to provide expert advice to Doublestar Drilling’s clients. He finds motivation in facing and solving challenging projects and being able to confidently deliver a solid foundation for clients to build on.

Born and raised in Regina, John spends his free time getting active outdoors and with his family. An avid hockey player, he also volunteers in his community coaching hockey and baseball.


Tyler believes that work should be a place of opportunity and fun. This mentality makes him a major contributor to Doublestar Drilling’s positive culture and environment. As project manager, he oversees many of the large piling projects in the Edmonton region. He also leverages his past experience in construction management to propel Doublestar’s current business forward with industry best practices.

Driven by the opportunity to be involved in a growing organization, Tyler puts his strategic mind to work streamlining business processes in order to successfully transition the organization through growth phases.

When Tyler isn’t at work, he loves to spend time with his wife and children. Whenever possible, he gets outdoors to enjoy backcountry snowboarding in the winter and fishing and hiking in the summer.


Rick has been a part of the Doublestar Drilling team for over 10 years, starting out as a swamper and working his way up to his current role as Operations Manager.  He is responsible for ensuring that all project operations deliverables are met and each project is executed safely and to be the highest quality standards. Rick’s ability to manage up to a dozen crews across shoring and piling scopes of work enables him to always have his finger on the pulse of the business. In combination with his NCSO safety designation, clients can be sure that their project’s will run as safely and efficiently as possible.

Rick never shies away from a challenge both on and off the jobsite, he is an avid hockey player, enjoys spending time in the outdoors and loves hanging out with his wife and their three young children.
