University of Lethbridge Destination Project

Doublestar Drilling (DSD) was awarded the shoring scope of work for the University of Lethbridge Destination project (new Science and Academic building) due to a unique soldier pile and shotcrete with tie-back anchors shoring design based on site specific requirements. The design was based on a hybrid concept to ensure and prevent settlement issues that could arise from a lagged shoring wall and future decomposition of lagging. The hybrid system allowed for the conventional construction of solider piles, but provided both a saving of time and money compared to the original Secant Pile shoring system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn806g1kjUM

The project began on June 13th 2016 and the University required the shoring and excavation to be completed before September 1st 2016. With the amount of material to excavate in a short timeline the traffic on site was high. DSD’s organizational and QA/QC skills to keep daily activities and the overall project on schedule were viewed by PCL (general contractor), and the University as a key part of why the shoring scope of the project was a huge success.

The soldier piling portion included 279 piles to depths between 5.2m and 17.55m and was completed on July 25th, less than 2 months from the start date. In early July, DSD started installing 161 anchors averaging 13m in length in 2 rows while shooting 2300m2 of shotcrete face.
