Piling and Shoring
When intricate work was required for the construction of the Mayfair 2 Tower in downtown Edmonton and adjacent to existing LRT tunnels, ITC Construction Group turned to Double Star Drilling. Under strict guidelines from the City of Edmonton’s Transportation and Infrastructure Department, we were engaged to complete all foundational piling and shoring.
The list of challenges was long and there was no margin for error. Piles needed to be installed beside and between the existing northbound and southbound LRT lines without affecting tunnel integrity, LRT service and rider well-being. Any error could result in massive safety risks for Edmonton Transit and the 100,000 passengers who utilize the LRT system daily. Double Star Drilling teamed up with a third-party engineering firm to monitor progress and strategically timed operations & equipment deliveries to accommodate the busy downtown core. At the conclusion of our work, we had installed 132 piles ranging in up to 1.35 meters in diameter and up to 20 meters deep. There had been zero impact to LRT tunnel integrity and zero interruptions to transit service.
