Piling
In early 2014, Double Star Drilling (DSD) was awarded by Dawson Wallace the new Home Depot Distribution Centre in Calgary, AB. With the site being 650,000 square feet, this is the largest piling project Doublestar has been awarded. After looking at the project details closely with the client, Doublestar proposed to conduct 2 load tests to provide cost savings for the owner. In June 2014, both tests were completed at 8,000 kN which resulted in a 1.8 Million dollar savings.
- Project Details
DSD’s piling crews began drilling in November 2014. The total scope of work included 8,000 piles with a 600mm diameter, 12m depth and 1m rock socket. Over the next 7 months of drilling, DSD committed three SoilMec drill rigs, two Watson 2500 drill rigs, two truck mounted Watson 1100 rigs, and a truck mounted Texoma 700 rig to complete the project on time. The biggest challenge was the constant change in weather which had a big factor on the site’s conditions impacting safety, access, coordination, and rig production. The ground would be too wet for the rigs to move around, but DSD handled it with specialized tooling, daily organization and rig mats. Having key personnel with experience with this size of a site was extremely important to ensure the coordination between piling crews and subcontractors went seamlessly.
Overall Dawson Wallace and the owner were very pleased with DSD’s commitment to overcome the challenging weather conditions, dedicating additional drills, equipment, and staff to ensure the projects schedule milestones were met.
